Services Upgrade by Kog 04 May 2006 3:30PM Pacific
Services were upgraded to r5243 from trunk last night. There shouldn't be many changes, as SASL is not running at the moment, but you'll note that channels now have keeptopic set on them by default, and ChanServ is now set to not leave channels until expiration (instead of on 0 user count).

In terms of errata email contacts were also updated on the site due to a most unpleasant user coming in and pointing out that they're listed as net instead of com.

Kallisti delinks by Kog 14 Jan 2006 12:54AM Pacific
Nenolod and Snipa will no longer be providing Kallisti (aka svn.atheme.org) as a GamesNET server. Kallisti has been removed from the server list, and the NS record and both parties are asking users to switch to either Ignite or Vulcan until the name changes propogate (which can take up to 72 hours).

At this time we continue to run Charybdis IRCD and Atheme, and hope for the best in terms our relationship with the developers, especially of Charybdis. I know Kuja and I have invested some time into Atheme as developers and are not relishing the idea of wasting that investment.

Any further developments will be posted here, hopefully w/ some sort of RSS for anyone that is a news-feed junkie. In the mean time, take it easy.

Website RFP by Kog 13 Jan 2006 9:12PM Pacific
GamesNET is considering updating the site, adding new web-based features to services and all that good jazz. If you would like to help us design the nexgen site for GamesNET, or have some ideas, please stop by #gamesnet and speak to one of the ops. We're currently recruiting for the position of web developer.

Backdraft is moving by Kog 3 Jan 2006 6:47PM Pacific
Backdraft will be moving boxes and IP ranges, and is being renamed to Ignite. New server information is available per our server list. We're also taking the opportunity to introduce our planned shorter name convention - location information will no longer be in our hostnames as of the next upgrade. Server names will become name.GamesNet.net, as opposed to name.city.zone.country.GamesNET.net.

New server link by Kog 15 Dec 2005 11:09PM Pacific
After a bit of a testlink we've linked a server graciously provided by Nenolod and Snipa. The server is in Troy, MI and is called Kallisti (go read some Greek history). You might recognize both new admins from the Atheme developer collective (and no, it's a different Snipa), the same folks we're doing services work with. Please check the servers page for details.

Still alive by Kog 5 Dec 2005 7:37PM Pacific
We're back, and we brought with us some new toys. Since the last update we've switched over to Charybdis IRCD and Atheme services, including some custom alterations on both. We've also enlisted some new server admins, such as Serpico, Snipa (no, not the same one that used to work here) and nenolod.

Since I've finally succeeded in getting some web login info, I'm going to editing some of the more... outdated information tonight, and then we're going to see about breathing some life back into the site with a new design and a suite of functions. Eventually we'll have our website talking to our services realtime again, but that needs a tad bit of scripting before it comes about.

If you have any questions we can be found (as always) in #gamesnet.

We greatly appreciate your continued support, and we look forward to resuming services ASAP.

When we resume IRC service, I invite the Internet gaming community to visit #GamesNET at irc://irc.GamesNET.com and via browser-based Java client, available here

Identity theft and domain hijack awareness by CoolHandLuke 20 Feb 2005 11:00AM Eastern
I greatly appreciate the support emails sent this way. I apologize for the lack of an identity theft and domain hijack FAQ. I understand a significant portion of the site visitors are new to GamesNET.

A four sentence summary: GamesNET experienced an identity theft and a domain hijack in the beginning of 2003. The GamesNET owner was only able to obtain evidence of the hijackers exact actions by filing a U.S. Federal case near the domicile of one of the hijackers. While hijacked, the domain was used to solicit "donations" from duped GamesNET users. These thousands of U.S. dollars were used to support the hijackers' efforts.

Please don't become frustrated due to lack of response to email queries. I have decided to compile the queries to assist with creating the hijack FAQ. There are numerous innacurate summaries published on the Internet regarding the hijack. Therefore, please visit the GamesNET web site for accurate information or copies of the court evidence.

There are over four thousand scanned-in evidence documents as well as another three-to-five thousand unscanned. Needless to say, I am likely going to wait to see what articles the U.S. Attorney's office will utilize. Ultimately, it is the documents they decide to use which will be most pertinent to the criminal case. However, the hijackers were forced to provide evidence during the U.S. Federal lawsuit. Highlights of the documents and logs provided can be found in this criminal highlights document. This document does not include evidence from me (plaintiff) such as the proof of ownership etc.

The document identifies the seven conspirators responsible for the identity theft and domain hijack. GamesNET's community was comprised of more than 150,000 registered users, more than 100 GamesNET volunteers, and the 5th largest chat network on the Internet prior to the identity theft and domain hijack. The news portion of GamesNET will continue focus providing awareness to the significant problem of identity theft, the failings of ICANN, and how both make domain theft a simple task.

GamesNET identity theft and domain hijack details - highlights provided to the U.S. Attorney's office by CoolHandLuke 15 Feb 2005 10:00PM Eastern
After my most recent conversation with the U.S. Attorney's office, it seems appropriate to publish the criminal highlights document. This document contains the resulting evidence from the Federal court-orders served to the domain hijackers. It does not include any evidence from me (plaintiff).

This evidence as well as other evidence from Verisign was obtainable only through Federal court-orders. The only way I was able to obtain these court-orders was by filing a U.S. Federal case near the domicile of a defendant. This process is painfully slow and very expensive. While hijacked, the gamesnet.net domain was used to solicit "donations" from duped GamesNET users. These thousands of U.S. dollars were used to support the hijackers' efforts. By conspiring, these hijackers pooled their resources.

I will likely publish all of the civil and criminal evidence as time permits. This should help organize my efforts to provide a full accounting of the details surrounding the identity hijack and the resulting domain hijack. It is my goal to provide awareness to the significant problem of identity theft, the failings of ICANN, and how both make domain theft a simple task. I do look forward to see justice with the prosecution of the hijackers. In addition, please find the document's PGP-signed md5 here.
